Plus/Minus FAQ
For a worked example, see how to calculate basketball plus-minus.
- What is plus-minus in basketball?
- Plus-minus (+/-) is the point differential while a player is on the floor. If your team outscores the opponent 14-8 while a player is in the game, that player is +6. If the opponent wins that stretch 10-4, the player is -6.
- How is player plus-minus calculated?
- Every time either team scores, each player on the floor for your team gets the points added (if your team scored) or subtracted (if the opponent scored). A player's plus-minus is the total at the end of the game. Players on the bench aren't affected, which is why substitutions have to be recorded.
- How is lineup plus-minus calculated?
- Lineup plus-minus works the same way, but for a five-player group instead of one player. Your points minus the opponent's points while those exact five were on the floor together is that lineup's plus-minus. HoopScoreboard lists every lineup you used, with its plus-minus and how many stints it played, even if a group was on the floor more than once.
- Is there a free plus-minus app?
- Yes. HoopScoreboard calculates player and lineup plus-minus for free, in your browser, with no account and no app store download. Some app store apps also show plus-minus, but many require an account or a paid plan.
- Do I have to track the other team's players?
- No. You only need the opponent's points. Tap the opponent card when they score, and plus-minus stays correct for every one of your players.
- Where is my game saved?
- In your browser on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so download the summary image before clearing your browser data or switching devices.
